How to Know If You Need a New Water Pump

How the Water Pump Works

If you live in an area where there isn't a municipal water supply, you might have to get your water from a well. A pump is needed to bring the water up from the well and into your home. Simplistically put, the pump is typically located at the bottom of the well, and it works by using an impeller - a device with curved blades - that spins around really fast. 
When the impeller spins, it creates a low-pressure area that pulls water up from the well and into the pump. Once the water is in the pump, it gets pushed through pipes that lead to a storage tank, usually located above ground. When you turn on a faucet in your home, the water that comes out is drawn from the storage tank. 
The pump is controlled by a pressure switch, which turns the pump on and off depending on the water pressure in the tank. When the pressure drops, the switch tells the pump to turn on and bring more water up from the well. When the tank is full, the switch tells the pump to turn off.

Here are Some Signs of a Faulty Water Pump

Now that you know how the water pump is meant to work, you can probably deduce when it is NOT working properly. Here are some signs that the water pump may be faulty.
Most obviously, you may notice a reduction in water pressure. It may be due to a clogged filter or an aging pump that is no longer able to generate enough pressure. 
Next, there are the strange noises. Unusual noises, such as grinding or rattling, may indicate that the motor or bearings are wearing out. These noises may also indicate that the impeller, which is responsible for moving the water, is damaged or obstructed.
Finally, watch out for water leaks. Water leaking from the pump is a sign of a damaged seal or gasket. This can cause the pump to lose pressure and fail.

When is it Time to Replace the Water Pump?

Many issues with the water pump can be repaired, but if you find yourself frequently repairing the pump, it may be more cost-effective to replace it. It might also be a good idea to get a new water pump if it is no longer providing adequate water pressure. On average, a water pump can give you 10 years of service before it will likely kick the bucket.
